Continuing Education Credit:

Nurses

Effective June 4, 2025 the Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) adopted a new practice under Iowa Administrative Code 655 Chapter 5. Under this revision, IBON will no longer review course offerings or maintain a list of board-approved continuing education providers.

What this means for IHLA:

  • No Pre-Approval Required: After June 4, 2025, IHLA will no longer be required to see approval for offering nursing continuing education.
  • IHLA Can Continue Offering Programs: IHLA programs* will qualify with no requirement to submit information for review or pre-approval through DMACC or any other previously IBON-approved co-sponsors.
  • Licensee Responsibility: Under the new practice, each nursing professional will be responsible for ensuring the continuing education they select meets the requirements of their professional board. These rules are detailed in Iowa Administrative Code 655 Chapter 5 (click here to read Administrative Code 655 Chapter 5).

Considerations for Nursing Professionals

  • Contact Hour Calculation: One nursing contact hour equates to 60 minutes of didactic instruction, learner-designed self-study, clinical practice, or laboratory practicum. Nurses must determine subject relevance independently.
  • Participant Certificates: IHLA will continue to provide certificates to attendees, including essential details such as event title, date, organization name, and total hours offered. Nurses will determine the applicable hours toward their licensing renewal based on the 60-minute contact hour standard.
  • Attendance Requirements: Full attendance at an event is required for participants to earn the contact hours listed on their certificate.

*IHLA Programs

There is now more opportunity to receive continuing education hours through IHLA programming.  Previously, only the bi-annual conferences received prior approval and therefore qualified.  The annual panel of payers event; and monthly webinars will now qualify, in addition to any other educational offerings that are added throughout the year.

REVENUE CYCLE MANAGERS, MEDICAL BILLERS, and CODERS

IHLA works with AAPC to secure continuing education hours with AAPC for the Annual Panel of Payers Event.  In 2025 the Denal$ to Dollars program CEUs will also be secured.

Certificate of Attendance*

A certificate of attendance is sent to all attendees electronically after the bi-annual conferences (Spring and Fall) and for the Panel of Payers Event.

*It is the licensee's responsibility to determine if the continuing education programs they attend meet the requirements of their professional board.
